What is a classroom security lockset?
A classroom security lockset lets a teacher lock the outside lever from inside the room with a key or thumbturn, while the inside lever always opens the door in one motion. Staff do not have to step into the corridor during a lockdown, and the door keeps the free egress that NFPA 101 requires.
What ANSI/SDI A250.8 level should school hollow metal doors be?
ANSI/SDI A250.8 defines four performance levels for steel doors, from Level 1 (Standard Duty) to Level 4 (Maximum Duty). Level 3 (Extra Heavy Duty, minimum 16 gauge) is common for classrooms, corridors and exterior school openings because of heavy daily use. The project specification sets the final level.
Which standard covers school storm shelter doors?
Storm shelter door assemblies are tested to ICC 500, the ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters. In Florida, school spaces designated as Enhanced Hurricane Protection Areas (EHPAs) under Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023) Section 453.25 must meet ICC 500 wind load and missile impact criteria for the exterior envelope. The door, frame and hardware must be tested together as an assembly for the required wind pressure and debris impact, and FEMA P-361 adds guidance for safe rooms.
