What is the difference between ADA and ABAAS for public building doors?
The ADA 2010 Standards apply to state and local government facilities and public accommodations, while the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards (ABAAS) apply to facilities designed, built, altered or leased with certain federal funds, including many federal buildings. Door requirements such as the 32-inch minimum clear width are similar under both.
What does an NFPA 80 fire door inspection check?
NFPA 80 calls for fire door assemblies to be inspected and tested at least annually by a knowledgeable person. The inspection checks labels, clearances, self-closing and latching operation, and missing or field-modified hardware, and the results must be documented.
Can fire-rated doors use electrified access-control hardware?
Yes, if the hardware is listed for use on the fire door assembly and the door still latches positively when closed. Electric strikes used on fire-rated doors must be fail-secure so the door stays latched during a fire.
