    How to choose

    Plan accessories with the restroom layout.     Where do grab bars go in an accessible toilet compartment?

    The 2010 ADA Standards (Section 604.5) call for a side-wall grab bar at least 42 inches long and a rear-wall grab bar at least 36 inches long. Section 609.4 requires grab bars to be mounted 33 to 36 inches above the finished floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface.

    How high can a restroom mirror be mounted under the ADA?

    Under Section 603.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards, a mirror above a lavatory or countertop must have the bottom edge of its reflecting surface no more than 40 inches above the finished floor. A mirror that is not above a lavatory or countertop must have it no more than 35 inches above the floor.

    Where should a toilet paper dispenser be mounted for ADA compliance?

    Section 604.7 of the 2010 ADA Standards places the toilet paper dispenser 7 to 9 inches in front of the water closet, measured to the centerline of the dispenser, with the outlet 15 to 48 inches above the finished floor and not behind a grab bar.
