How to Choose Commercial Door Hardware

Match hardware to the fire rating. Fire doors need self-closing, positive latching hardware listed for fire doors, and panic hardware on a rated door must be fire exit hardware (listed to UL 305 and UL 10C).

Check egress. The Florida Building Code requires panic or fire exit hardware on latching doors serving Group A or Group E rooms with 50 or more occupants and on doors serving Group H occupancies.

Choose locks by traffic and security: cylindrical (bored) locksets for standard commercial traffic and easy service, and mortise locks for hospitals, hotels and high-frequency doors.

Size hinges by weight and frequency: ball bearing butt hinges on standard doors, continuous hinges on high-traffic or abuse-prone openings, and stainless steel near the coast.
