A 36 inch door is the usual choice on accessible routes because the ADA requires at least 32 inches of clear width with the door open 90 degrees. A fire-rated door is tested to NFPA 252 or UL 10C and labeled to hold back fire for a set time, from 20 minutes to 3 hours. A hurricane-rated door is an exterior assembly tested for wind pressure and, where required, debris impact, and approved under Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade NOA. Many hollow metal assemblies carry both ratings.
