How to Choose Commercial Doors

Start with the wall. The wall's fire rating sets the door's rating, so confirm each opening's required rating in the code analysis before choosing a material.

Check exterior wind requirements. In Miami-Dade and Broward counties (the HVHZ), exterior doors need a Miami-Dade NOA or a Florida Product Approval approved for HVHZ use.

Choose the material for the environment: hollow metal for durability and the highest fire ratings, wood for finished interiors, and fiberglass for salt air, pools and washdown areas.

Set the duty level. ANSI/SDI A250.8 grades hollow metal doors from Level 1 standard duty (20 gauge) to Level 4 maximum duty (14 gauge).

Add special performance only where the opening needs it: UL 752 bullet resistance, blast criteria, STC sound ratings or lead lining.

Coordinate glazing and hardware. Vision lites must be listed for the door's rating, and closers, latches and exit devices must suit the fire rating and egress requirements.

Yes. Mills & Nebraska supplies hurricane-rated and windstorm resistant door assemblies for Florida wind zones, including products with Miami-Dade NOA approval for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone.
What is the difference between a fire-rated door and a hurricane-rated door?
A fire-rated door is tested to NFPA 252 or UL 10C and labeled to hold back fire for a set time, from 20 minutes to 3 hours. A hurricane-rated door is an exterior assembly tested for wind pressure and, where required, debris impact, and approved under Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade NOA. Many hollow metal assemblies carry both ratings.
