Do church entry doors need panic hardware?
Often, yes. Sanctuaries and fellowship halls are assembly occupancies, and NFPA 101 and the Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023) require panic or fire exit hardware on latching egress doors once the occupant load reaches the code threshold (50 or more occupants under Florida Building Code Section 1010.2.9, and 100 or more under NFPA 101 for assembly occupancies). The architect's life safety plan sets the occupant load for each room.
Can worship facility doors lock for security and still meet code?
Yes, when the hardware locks the outside while allowing free egress from inside in one operation. Security locksets, electrified exit devices and access control can support a lockdown plan without add-on barricade devices that block egress.
Can a replacement door match an existing historic entry?
Our team can review the existing door design, dimensions and hardware and help specify replacement doors, frames and hardware for the opening. Fire-rated openings must use labeled assemblies, which can limit how closely a rated door replicates an original.
