Mills and Nebraska

Is Your Calendar Marked? It is WIC Week!

Posted on Mar 07 2022

Coast to Coast and North to South this week there are celebrations, presentations, and gatherings applauding all things women and construction. WIC Week celebrates Women In Construction and was started by NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction.)

Construction is male-dominated but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for women at the table. Alice Ashley, one of the 16 founding members of NAWIC, said, “We were women with electricity in our veins, cement dust on our shoes, sawdust on our minds…” The purpose of the organization is to support women in their construction roles.

WIC Week began in 1998 with the intention of “amplifying awareness of women in the [construction] industry and as a way to celebrate the accomplishments of the women who paved the way” (pun intended). Did you know that currently 11% of construction workers are women and there are over 117 NAWIC Chapters across the country? That's a lot of celebrating going on this week!

Some of our local WIC Week events are a location jobsite tour, luncheon, boat tour (girls just wanna have fun!), and our monthly dinner membership meeting. There are also virtual events for those who want to join across State or county lines.

Mills & Nebraska's contribution to women being at the table started a while ago and was solidified in 2011 when a woman took the sole reigns of our company. We are proud to be certified as a woman-owned, operated, and controlled company. We are also proud to be a Corporate Sponsor of our local NAWIC Chapter that supports female peers and brings awareness to career opportunities for women. We are excited to be celebrating WIC Week!
