Happy Presidents' Day or Is It?

Posted on Feb 21 2022

Today is not just a day schools, banks, the stock market, or post offices are closed but it is a day to pause and reflect on our founding father and first President, George Washington. Some call this holiday “Presidents Day” but officially it really is “Washington’s Birthday”.

Like any good construction project, you need a strong solid foundation upon which to build or construct. Laying the proper groundwork is imperative to a successful and long-lasting project. What any great contractor does is what President George Washington did for our country. His leadership, initially as a military hero in our win for our independence from England and as our first President, helped create the foundation for the great U.S.A. we know today.

President Lincoln was great too and there are others who contributed courageously to our country. But no one in our country’s history took a paltry military budget, mostly untrained soldiers made of farmers and pastors, and beat one of the most well-trained and disciplined armies in the world – Great Britain’s British Army. George Washington didn’t even take a salary during the Revolutionary War. Among other things, during his tenure as a military leader he also suffered from severe supply chain issues that threatened the colonies war efforts and success.

As our first President, can you guess the budget for his Presidential campaign? Zero. Yep, that’s right zero dollars. He was skilled to manage no budgets, minimal budgets, and fluctuating budgets with great success.

Even today, a member of the Senate pauses on Washington's birthday and reads his Presidential Farewell Address. This has been a tradition since 1896.

Washington is rightly known as the “Father of our Country.” He walked on untrodden ground both as a military leader and as the first President of the United States. What other President who has occupied the White House can hang their hat on those credentials? None.

So, instead of saying, “Happy Presidents’ Day”, we say, “Happy Washington’s Birthday!” We pause and give honor where honor is due.
